Installing VirtualBox 2.0.x On Windows XP

This tutorial shows how you can install Sun xVM VirtualBox on Windows XP. With VirtualBox you can create and run guest operating systems ("virtual machines") such as Linux and Windows under a host operating system.

This document comes without warranty of any kind! I want to say that this is not the only way of setting up such a system. There are many ways of achieving this goal but this is the way I take. I do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you!

 

Open a browser and go to http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads. For Windows XP, click on the x86 link right of VirtualBox 2.0.2 for Windows hosts:

Select Save in the download dialogue...

... and store the VirtualBox installer somewhere on your hard drive (e.g. on the desktop):

The VirtualBox installer is now being downloaded:

After the download has finished, go to the location where you've stored the installer (e.g. the desktop) and double-click on the installer to start the installation:

The setup wizard starts. Click on Next:

Accept the VirtualBox license and click on Next:

On the next screen you have the possibility to modify the VirtualBox features that will be installed. Please do this only if you know what you're doing! Usually the default settings are ok, so you just click on Next:

Click on Install to start the installation:

VirtualBox is now being installed:

If you get a warning telling you that VirtualBox did not pass the Windows logo test, you can ignore the warning and continue with the installation:

Click on Finish to complete the installation:

You can now start VirtualBox (Start > Programs > Sun xVM VirtualBox > VirtualBox):

If you start VirtualBox for the first time, you will be asked to register your VirtualBox installation. Please fill in your name and email address:

That's it! You can now start to create and run virtual machines with VirtualBox:
